How to check your Codex usage, and how its limits work

Where to see your Codex usage (the dashboard, /status in the CLI), which plans have five-hour and weekly limits, and what to do when you hit one, from OpenAI docs.

A two-ink gauge: the outer arc is the five-hour window, the bar of days below is the week, and the needle sits close to the limit.

You can see your Codex usage in the chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage dashboard, and inside the Codex CLI /status shows what is left. Below is how the limits work and what you can do when you hit one, based on OpenAI's own documentation.

Where do I see my Codex usage?

  • The usage dashboard: chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage shows your current limits and when they reset. It opens only when you are signed in to ChatGPT.
  • /status in the Codex CLI: OpenAI's pricing page says to use /status to see your remaining limits during a CLI session.
  • /usage in the Codex CLI: opens the account token usage menu. /usage daily, /usage weekly and /usage cumulative go straight to that view, and an earned limit reset you hold can be redeemed there.
  • /statusline in the Codex CLI: picks what the footer shows. Turn on the rate limits item and the limit stays in view while you work.

Typing / in the CLI's input opens the list of commands, which is the place to check if your version names them differently. OpenAI suggests looking at the dashboard every week or two to understand your pace.

How do the Codex limits work?

  • Codex is included in the ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans.
  • Plus and Standard Business have a limit per five-hour period. Pro currently has no five-hour limit.
  • Weekly limits may also apply.
  • How many messages fit in five hours depends on the model and the task. The numbers OpenAI publishes are estimates, not fixed limits, and cloud tasks can use more of the allowance than local messages.

OpenAI does not publish a fixed reset time; it points to the dashboard for your current limits and when they reset.

What can I do when I hit the limit?

  • A turn already in progress keeps working to the end, subject to fair use limits.
  • Plus and Pro users can buy additional credits without changing plan. Business, Edu and Enterprise plans with flexible pricing can buy workspace credits.
  • Anyone can run extra local chats with an API key, billed at standard API rates.
  • If usage is higher than expected, OpenAI suggests checking whether a smaller model or a tighter task scope would still do the job.

Checking and carrying on away from your desk

The dashboard works in a phone browser too. To run /status or keep working in the Codex CLI on your own computer while you are away from it, see using the Codex CLI from your phone.
